Learning in Science

Science with Mrs Walker

First off we started by pouring vinegar into a plastic bottle then put a teaspoon of baking soda into the bottle of vinegar then we watched it grow up and out of the bottle.Then we got a coke bottle and made a paper tube and put the mentos in the paper tube. Then Tyler opened the lid on the coke and I put the tube on top of the bottle and removed my hand ....... out came this big coke fountain.
What I learnt is that when the chemicals in the coke meet the chemicals in the mints it reacts and mint molecules meet the coke molecules they join together and make a big jet in the air.

Brooke Lamb and Calf Day 2016 on PhotoPeach IMG_0024.JPG
I was hoping and hoping that the rain would hold off. The forecast said it was meant to rain but there was no time to worry. Watching my brother with my lamb I felt so sorry for him. His beloved pet lamb, Izzy, died yesterday ... a day before lamb and calf day so he had no time to get another one. Finally it was my turn in the ring but my lamb was not playing ball. As we were walking around the ring she was just trotting along behind me, but Fisher’s lamb was dragging him around the ring. Next was Care and Attention. I explained why it had chalk all over it and what I feed it and what kind of lamb it is… Then .. Calling ….. it was a EPIC fail. My lamb had decided to give up on me. All that training and time.

On Thursday, 19th of May 2016, we had a cultural Maori day at Kimbolton school and hall.
First off in the morning we went to the Kimbolton hall to learn Maori with the Kahurangi Performing Arts Troop.
We split into groups and the first thing I did was learn to use the ti rakau which is a small stick that the maori used to help their hand and eye coordination, wrist and forearm. After that, I had a go at the poi. It was quite tricky and I really enjoyed it. Then we learnt about matariki ,the maori new year and song to go with it. Then we played one of the maori games that they play before a performance. Following this we watched a show that they had planned for us. After watching their amazing show we walked up to Kimbolton school and had a shared lunch.

Walking into a big dark room an enormous sculpture of a injured ANZAC soldier awkwardly lying on the muddy ground. His crippled hand was covered in blood, the other pointing a gun at the enemy! His face was furious with anger and despair.The sweat on his grimy face looked fresh and the uniform he was wearing appeared to be authentic. I kept forgetting that it was only a sculpture to represent what it was like in the war. They had done it so well that I felt like as if I was there at Gallipoli with the soldier. I felt his pain.

Animation at Capital e
After dumping all our bags in big wooden boxes, walking into a big dark room we heard a voice.
“Take a seat,” said Sam, our instructor, and instantly everyone raced to seats in the middle of the room. He explained to us about what we going to be doing.
To start off we all went to a computer and did a maze to practice using the tablet to draw. After that we used animation-ish to animate our names. Then we had make a ball bounce using the duplicate button and moving it a bit. I found it really easy to use animation-ish and thought that it was a very great site to use for animating. After everyone drew a ball we all got to make our own animations. I made a video about a spider making a spider web. It was really cool.
After that we walked around to the playground on the waterfront and had a bread roll and some baking and some fruit. Then we played on the playground which had a giant slide that everyone loved to go down. There were lots of pigeons and Savannah and Elliot loved to chase them and the boys loved to feed them.
After lunch we went back to Capital E and got ready to film ‘Across the trenches’. First of all Kit showed us around the studio. Then he gave us our scripts and our jobs. We started practicing our words and Kit showed Sarah, Jacob and Phinece how to do their jobs. Then we did a run through so Sarah could practice directing and Jacob could practice filming and Phinece could practice rolling the autoqueue. After that … a dress rehearsal and then the final take. I found it really easy to read of the autocue and Phinece did a good job rolling it. Afterwards watching it at school it looked very professional and I was very proud. By Brooke

Wellington War Museum
Warning Please Step Away…….. Silence strikes the room and everyone's eyes turn to a small boy in the corner that was leaning over the railing and got too close to a piece of artwork ... “Elliot!!” exclaimed a little girl beside him.
Our tour guide, Andy, told us lots of interesting facts about World War One and he had loads of great knowledge about it all. He also knew heaps of inspiring stories about curious soldiers and nurses that made a difference during World War One. I was truly inspired by some and I have learnt more today then I think I have ever learnt before in a day. We learnt what they had to eat and what the trenches were like and kind of guns they used and what kind of clothes they wore, and then to top that off, we went outside with Ashley and learnt about the unknown warrior, a soldier that they dug up from an ANZAC graveyard in Gallipoli. First they checked it was a New Zealander by looking at its clothes.After that they brought the soldier back to New Zealand and walked the soldier to its new grave. Lots of people turned up to see the soldier that represents all of the other unknown soldiers that died in the war. After we learnt about the unknown warrior, we went down to a great big memorial made out of wood, which represents the Australian and New Zealand soldiers that fought in World War One. At the end of our tour we laid a wreath at the last post and Daniel read the Ode in Maori very well. After that we went to Monsoon Poon for dinner. By Brooke

This is one of the things they use to remember how to get in and get a job done at school and anywhere you are.
The next thing we learnt was that the greatest display of leadership is when a person stands up for something.Then we watched four different movie clips and for each movie clip determined who the leader was and which 'stand up' principle they used.We also learnt sensible ways for leaders to stand up for themselves. looking for opportunities to lead.

Yaju Cheng is a Chinese secondary school teacher that came from Beijing to New Zealand. Yaju is a very nice lady very keen to learn English and share her skills with us. She taught Chinese to us we learnt to count to ten.
yi=one
er=two
san=three
si=four
wu=five
liu=six
qt=seven
ba=eight
jiu=nine
shi=ten
and Yaju gave us these Chinese writing books and we learnt to write the numbers in Chinese too. We also learnt to make dumplings to make the dough. You have to put 1kg of flour in a bowl 1 egg white a pinch of salt and slowly add water until it is dough. She taught us to finger paint and write our names in Chinese. I had lots of fun.

Wellington Camp
While on camp we went to Capital E, a technology studio with 2 different studios. One studio for Music making and lots of other things and one for TV productions. Our whanau group was involved in learning about producing programmes such as News items for the TV.

My role was as an Interviewer. Hannah and Zahn were the Anchors in the studio. They explained the news item then crossed to me for further information from my interviewees. We discussed Apiti School’s learning goals and how we use them everyday.

Huntah explained how Apiti children learn and the Bon Apiti programme. James explained how Apiti is a Green/Gold Enviroschool and what that means in our community. Chloe told us how they plan their productions.

Then it went back to Hannah and Zahn. Following their article I interviewed all the whanau groups and asked them about what they do at the school. First the Community Creators, then Hydro Rangers, Expert Plantagators, Supa Small Blacks and finally Waste Busters.

After that it went back to Hannah and Zahn and before I knew it was my turn to interview Tyler and Dylan. Tyler told me about the Apiti Show and what happens there. Then Dylan told me about the Apiti School lamb and calf day. Finally when Dylan had finished it went back to Hannah and Zahn to wrap it up.

Anneke and Lacey came on with the ‘Apiti where’s that’ session ... then the school song.

It all went smoothly. There were a couple of muck ups but that is live TV producing!.

Monsoon Poon

On the first night of camp we had planned to go to an Indian or Asian Restaurant and not knowing what restaurants there are, we were unsure of where we would choose.

We were walking back from Te Papa when we heard a voice say, “What should we have for dinner?” It was Mrs Cuming.

“The Bon Apiti group can do that job,” exclaimed Mrs Fielder.

So the Bon Apiti group and Mrs Cuming set off on a mission to find a good place to eat while all the others set off to the youth hostel.

When we got to the hostel we made our beds and got ready for when the Bon Apiti group got back.

Eventually they all came in with a bound shouting, “Monsoon Poon ... it is Vietnamese, Chinese, Thai, Indian, Indonesian and Malaysian! Let’s go now.”

We set off cheerfully down the street and finally got to the Monsoon Poon. Our stomachs grumbling we walked into a room filled with red and gold and lots of amazing sculptures and pictures. The waitress showed us to our table and we sat down. I could see the excitement in everyone’s faces.

The waiter asked if I would like the tiger or the cobra and explained that came with a drink and a sundae. The Tiger is a chicken kebab with rice and naan bread and the Cobra is butter chicken with rice and naan bread.

“Can I please have the cobra?”

“Cool and what drink do you want? There is sprite, orange juice or apple juice.” “Could I please have orange juice.”

For the sundae ... we will make them for you to collect on the way back from the observatory.So the Bon Apiti group will pick them up for you and take them back to the hostel.

I started to colour in my picture and before I knew it my dinner was already served! When everyone had finished we took the cable car to the observatory.

On the way back the Bon Apiti group got the sundaes and we ate them all in the meeting room. It was a great night.

Science Investigation
Aim:
Find out what type of conditions worms like to live in as far as acidity goes.
Hypothesis:
We don't think the worms will like the acid conditions
Introduction
We are developing a new worm farm at our school. We want it to be successful and the worms to be healthy. It will help other people to learn what worms like also!
Variables
Acid and Alkaline
Materials
Potting mix
Alkaline solution (Black tape)
Acid solution (Red tape)
Ice cream containers
Red worms
Method
 • Get three containers
 • Join them up and cut out a highway so the worms can move freely between the containers
 • Put 4 cups of potting mix in each container
 • Add 1 cup of water to each container to keep it moist
 • Put 6 worms in each container
 • Add some food for them. We put a banana peel on top.
 • Label the containers ... 1, 2 and 3
 • Add alkaline and acid to the containers as follows:-
 • In container 1, add 6 drops of alkaline in 1/2 a cup of water = pH 4.0
 • In container 2, control add nothing - pH 6.5
 • In container 3, add 10 drops of acid in 1/2 a cup of water = pH 8.0
 • Count the number of worms in each container daily
 • Record these on the table

Day 8

Conclusion
Our prediction was wrong because the worms like the acid more than the alkaline and moved across to that container.
Evaluation and Discussion
My results were reliable because the worms could move from container to container. I think it was a fair test because we kept the moisture the same, fed all the worms and if we were one short we recounted all the containers until we got to a total of 18. Because the containers were glued together all the conditions were the same.
At school we have always had tiger worms in our worm bin and they don’t like the citrus, which makes the soil acid. But we used red worms in our experiment. So we think that red worms can live in a higher acidic soil right down to 4.0pH.

Waste Busters' Pinata

Mrs Fielder had a really good idea. She had seen Pinatas in Central America and thought we could make really good ones for technology but we all thought that the main point of Pinatas is to eat the lollies!

 1. We needed to achieve a group working together and everyone getting ago at something!
 2. We needed to keep the structure.
 3. We needed to keep the shape.
 4. We needed to keep the decorations colourful.
We had to work out what shape would be easiest and what would look good and what a shape would look like! We had to make sure that everyone got a go at doing something!

 • We had to use Cardboard box
 • Paper
 • Cardboard
 • Pens / coloring things
 • We only had 2 more days to decide on what to make
 • We had to think about who can do what and what skills they have to make it
 • We had to make sure it would break and wasn't too soft!
We had to think about what colors go together and what the windows and doors would look like and how the shape would look with paper wrapped around the body of our Broom Broom Car!

We first were going to do a Globe but the shape was a circle and too difficult to make,

The roundness was hard to cut out of the cardboard! We had to make another plan and we all decided that a broom broom car would be easy to make because it is square.

We made a goal to make sure that everyone's decorations were put on and that everyone had an important job to do!
We did very well to achieve our goal because everyone colored in a window and a picture!

Our next step is to cover up all the white and do some more decorations and colors and face highlights!

Presentation:

 • We had to make sure that all the colors matched and didn't make the windows and decorations look not very good!
 • Every one's windows and pictures were put on.
 • I like our pinata because it is very colorful, I think our next step is to glue on the windows. ( Bianca )
 • I like our eyes and wheels because they are colorful and each one's different, I think out next step is to maybe do some more face decorations and fix some bits. ( Brooke )
 • I liked our eyes because they were very colorful and I liked the blur around it, I think that our next step is to put in the driver and mouth. ( Tyler )
 • I think that our next step is to do some more face bits, I think that our pinata is great because everyone got to do something! ( Hannah )

Camp Cameo 2

The Takahe has a very weird colour; some places green and some places blue.

It is fat with rough feathers. The bright red beak has brown spots from scraping it on stones. It is not as graceful as a pukeko but its legs are like they are pointing their toes before they take a step while wandering free.

Moving like a turkey, they bob along moving their necks every time they step.

You might think they are common but they are really rare.

There is only 3 on the north end ... Mum / Dad / Baby

"Everyone remember to not go out side eating because the Kaka will eat your food."
Nek minute!!
Zahn walks out side eating the last mouthful of his biscuit.
And swooping down from the door a hungry Kaka landed on his shoulder.
It opened up his mouth and took the food out. He screamed...
And the bird flew away that second.

Look at my powerpoint on toilets.
I found out how they work and I showed the Oroua Schools at the science expo.
At the science expo liked working out what colour is in a felt pens

I think my powerpoint and it was good and I help Mrs C to learn about toilets because she did not know about them so we learnt together.
We learnt that toilets have an S bend.
I was proud of my powerpoint.
I said all about toilets and I took a toilet for them to see how it flushed.
My Granny sent me photos of toilets in Vanautu in the bush.
Next time i would like to learn about how radios work.
